A very strong story about a forced marriage.
A wedding ceremony takes place in Oslo in 2006. The bride is only 13 years old, the groom is an older cousin. For the next few years, the teenage girl lives as married every weekend, and when she starts high school, she has to move in with her husband full-time. After three years in the forced marriage, she flees for her life and manages to notify the Norwegian authorities. Large parts of her family are arrested, and shortly afterwards they are sentenced to prison in what is to be known as the most serious forced marriage case in Norway ever. The girl is urgently moved to the other side of the country and given a hidden identity. Her new name is Daniella.
How could this happen – in Norway, in our time? Where can you escape when your closest family won’t help you? And how do you survive an adolescence period marked by shame, abuse and threats?
1178 Nights is Daniella’s story and at the same time a merciless close study of honor culture, told by Daniella herself to Marte Spurkland.
… velskrevet, intens og viktig.
