Norske strikketradisjoner

In this book, Nina Granlund Sæther has dived into history in search of clues that can tell how the knitting technique came to Norway, and how it became part of our national history and identity.

The very special thing about the knitting technique is that with the help of one long thread and two simple needles you can conjure up fantastic small and large creations. It is difficult to find much simpler tools than knitting needles; nevertheless, it has been possible to create comfortable and functional garments for both everyday life and parties.

With the help of texts, pictures and textiles, Sæther documents how we have dressed in knitted garments from the inside out for about 400 years. As early as 1865, Eilert Sundt ,the father of the Norwegian sociology, pointed out that the technique was useful for the poor and comfortable for the noble, and equally relevant for both young and old.
